Here's a CD recording of the final hour of Radio City from the 8th February 1967 : - Potted History: When David 'Screaming' Lord Sutch sold teenage station 'Radio Sutch' to his manager Reg Calvert in September 1964, little did he realise the implications of the move. Calvert invested money into the station, and by June 1965, City had a new mast, a bigger transmitter, and was making money. Calvert promoted many of his beat groups on the station, and City DJ's appeared at events with these groups. City, by now, had several accomplished DJ's, and was very quickly catching up in audience terms with the established stations Radio Caroline and Radio London. Whilst Radio City's signal was never as good as these stations, it built up a solid listenership in the Kent and Essex area. With the death of Reg Calvert in June 1966, the Radio City operation was taken over by his wife Dorothy. Everything was running comfortably, until the station received a court summons on 31st January 1967, for allegedly broadcasting within the British territorial three mile limit. Mrs Calvert argued that the station was indeed outside this limit, and did not come under British jurisdiction, however the court found against her and Radio City, and the station was instructed to close at midnight on the 8th February 1967. After an hour of as much nostalgia as the soon to be out of work DJ's could muster, the station finally left the air to the strains of the British national anthem at around 12.20a.m. This recording is a nice item for collectors of Pirate Radio memorabilia. The sound quality is reasonable to good, considering that the recording was made over 40 years ago......
